In His Step
INTRODUCTION
To walk in someone’s step is to take after him. Jesus is God incarnate. Theologians call Him the very God and the very man. He came to earth to show us the way (John 14:6). He is the believers’ role model.
In our text today, the Bible says we should look unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. He is the CEO of Christian faith. To look unto Jesus means to depend on Him; to make Him our example and to mirror ourselves in the light of His ways of life.
GUIDE BY HIS SPIRITUAL LIFE
- Though God incarnate, Jesus humbled Himself to learn the word of God in the temple under the religious teachers (Luke 2:46-47). Do you have time to study the bible with others? (2Tim.3:16-17). Some Christians today are not different from that of unbelievers because they lack the knowledge of the word of God that can prune them.
- Jesus was baptized by John as a sign of repentance (Matt.3:13-17, 7-10). Do you have a conversion experience? Are you humble enough to submit yourself to church authority?
- He went out to preach – John 4:7; Luke 10:1-3. When last did you tell people about Jesus? You can’t be filled with the word and not bubble with the desire to share it.
- He is a prayer warrior. Even with His busy schedules, He still found time to pray and keep vigil (Matt.26:36; 14:23; Mark 1:35. The church lacks power today because members are not ready to pay the price in prayer. John Wesley said, “catch on fire with enthusiasm and people will come from miles to watch you burn.”
- He fasted. It is paramount as Christians that we fast and pray in order to overcome trials like Jesus (Matt.4:1-3, Matt.17:21).
- He worked as God instructed Him. John 5:30. Do you hear from God, take instructions from Him and exercise caution just because the Lord told you to do so? Until you learn the act of obedience, your spiritual activities are just mere exercise.
- He used the divine power present in Him to help humanity. Luke 4:18. When last did you touch someone’s life even with all that God has done for you?
- He has integrity. Matt.27:19, 23-24. Are you a man of integrity? Verse one of our text today admonishes us to lay aside the weight and sin that can hinder us from following Jesus step.
VALUES THAT GUIDED JESUS’ SPIRITUAL LIFE
- He knew who He was – God in the flesh. Matt.16:16-17.
- He knew His reason for coming to the earth as a human being – to save the lost. Luke 19:10.
- He knew where He was going. John 14:2.
All these guided His daily activities in life. What are the values guiding your life? Do you know who you are and where you are going?
CONCLUSION
Jesus is our perfect example in this Christian race. We must follow His footsteps. Talk is cheap as almost everyone on earth can talk; so also is sermon as long as you can read the bible and research. But living a Christ like life is what is expected of you and I. John Wesley preached for more than 20 years before been born again. Are you born again? Check your spiritual life today in the mirror of Jesus’ way of life.
